Early Decision is binding, Early Action is not, however many kids are confused about Early Decision. Parents think of it as a marketing tool in the application process that will help you get in. To a point, this is correct: it is an excellent strategy. Many schools accept a good proportion of their ED applicants–and why not? They can count on these students to fill their freshman class! Makes sense, doesn’t it? On the other hand, the whole idea behind Early Decision is to be "in love" with the school you are choosing. It’s the school you want attend to more than anything or anywhere else in the world. It’s the 25 on the ten-point scale. So it’s not a tool, it’s the real deal. You sign it, you get in, and you’ll go. It’s not up for debate.
